Empowering refugee women for success in hospitality careers

EmpowerHer

Overview

EmpowerHer is a collaborative Erasmus+ initiative that brings together organizations from Germany, Austria, Greece, and Spain. The project aims to support refugee women in their journey towards social and professional integration through tailored vocational training, language education, and mentorship programs. By focusing on the hospitality sector, EmpowerHer addresses both the language and professional skill gaps that often hinder refugee women’s inclusion in the labor market.

The project combines research-based methodologies, profession-specific language curricula, and innovative peer-to-peer learning models to create sustainable and replicable solutions for empowering low-literacy refugee women.

The Problem

Refugee women face numerous challenges in integrating into their host countries, including:

  • Limited or no knowledge of the host country’s language, making communication and job acquisition difficult.
  • Many refugee women lack access to structured vocational training, particularly in fields aligned with labor market demands.

  • Refugee women often experience exclusion, which impacts their mental well-being and hinders their integration.
  • Hospitality employers frequently cite skill and language gaps as barriers to hiring refugee women, creating a vicious cycle of exclusion.
EmpowerHer

The Idea

EmpowerHer provides a multi-faceted solution by:

  1. Conducting needs analyses and benchmarking best practices to design tailored tools and curricula.
  2. Developing a curriculum that equips participants with the language skills needed for four key hospitality roles: kitchen assistant, housekeeping, front desk assistant, and stock management.
  3. Building networks where seasoned participants mentor and support newcomers, fostering both learning and confidence.
  4. Training VET professionals to effectively support low-literacy refugee women through innovative and inclusive teaching methods.

  • Promote inclusion and equal opportunities for refugee women in the hospitality sector, paving the way for economic independence and personal empowerment.
  • Equip VET professionals with tools to better support marginalized learners, ensuring sustainable and high-quality education for all.
  • Foster collaboration across Europe, creating a model for integrating vulnerable groups that can be replicated in other sectors and regions.
